It does not take a great deal of imagination to travel back to a night in the late 19th century when an early settler family, exhausted from a day working the range, sat in the front yard of their new homestead and wondered in awe the vision of stars unfolding before them. A brisk August night breeze, a rare pleasure, might have washed away the memories of the stifling heat endured just hours before. In content rest, they might have pondered the glory of a creator that erected such a resolute stairway to the heavens in the background of the imposing Huachuca mountains. Eventually, when fatigue overpowered wonder, they would retire to their humble mountain stronghold. With a waiting mattress and dreams of goals fulfilled by hard work and strong faith, they would retire for the night. It was a rest much needed for tomorrow would be another day in this high desert paradise, and they had a future to build for coming generations to enjoy.
Brown Canyon Ranch is one of the most iconic southern Arizona high desert stepping stones to the romantic notions of the wild west past. In truth, the early settlers who lived there enjoyed simple lives of hard work and endurance. Without the distractions of modern life's innumerable distractions, they would have been happy enjoying the simple pleasures of witnessing the incredible beauty of the world around them. In many ways, I envy their lives.
Good photography begins with the vision of a scene. Anyone can take a photo of a view someone else captured first, but great images are the result of many factors, with an idea being the first. I would be remiss then if I did not give credit for the concept of this image to the person who found it. Sean Yeltsin, the Arizona Yeti, came to me as I was shooting the Milky Way behind a windmill on the property and told me about the stars lining up through the trees in the front of the house. He gets the credit for the vision. I just snapped the picture.
God has blessed me with the vision of the world He created and the ability to share its glory with others. I remain His scribe.
