One of the highlights of any visit to Ding Darling NWR is seeing the Reddish Egrets. To me, they are the most beautiful of the North American Heron / Egret family. I first saw them on a TV special which highlighted their remarkable "hooded" hunting technique. Seeing it live is a special treat.

A Near Threatened species; these magnificent birds were decimated by plume hunters in the late 1800's. Numbers are coming back slowly, with near 2,000 pairs today. Still, this is why we must be ever vigilant in our land management and conservation efforts. We should never be so ambitious that we mistake progress and fashion as the justification to eradicate a species.
