Set high on the leading edge of the Huachuca Mountains, nestled near the first summit, is Montezuma Pass. On either side of the Pass the world unfolds onto immense valleys. To the east is my valley, the San Pedro, whose grasslands lead to its namesake, the San Pedro River.
To the west is an immense valley, its plains punctuated by a mountain range so distant that their massive summits appear as tiny hills. It is here that the spectacle that is the southern Arizona high desert monsoon makes its most potent declaration regarding its impact on life. Most of the year this valley is painted in the muted hues of brown and taupe the define the desert. But, during monsoon, it is transformed into a study of brilliant verdancy whose power can transport the soul to other climes.
As we stood at the overlook, a mighty storm-wind from the south carried the smells of caliche, clay, and cactus in its moist air. The storms in front of us raged from deep into the Mexican homeland, over the border, until they disappeared into the Parker Canyon lake area. This was a wall of storms across the horizon that knew no border and abided no man's rules. Its power was absolute, its statement complete. Here, the mighty tempest that gives the desert life declared its dominance - we were but insignificant observers to the glory.
I am continually awed by the power of God. I remain His scribe.
