Those who don't live in the high desert cannot fully appreciate the transformative effect that monsoon has on the region. While the southern Arizona high desert invokes a subtle beauty year-round, during monsoon the scrappy, arid landscape becomes a canopy shaded in hues of living green. In a land baked hard by sun-scorched fire, the clay-colored ground scape blossoms into a stunning verdant carpet as far as the eye can see. This beauty is more enhanced during the days beginning and end when deep shadows accent the crevices and folds created by the undulating sky islands.

This is probably my favorite time of year here. It is a time when the familiar is rendered unfamiliar and infinite vistas evoke a sense of being in other lands. That is how I felt standing at an overlook at Coronado National Memorial this morning. While the summit was completely fogged in (photos of that forthcoming) just 100 yards below the view was unobstructed. The effect was magical.

There are times that life becomes challenging. Times when emotions drive me to dimmed corners of darkness and doubt. At those times, the blessing of His gift of the beauty of this world can profoundly change my spirit. I can be lifted from the fog of uncertainty to the clarity of redemptive joy in just moments. That is the gift I have received and the blessing I hope to share. I remain His scribe.
