Storm Crossing

Storm Crossing

As I stood at the entrance to Coronado National Memorial and looked south at a late-season storm developing across the border, I couldn't help but think that weather knows no boundaries. Ahead of me a bright green line of green shrubs and trees partially obscured the large wall created to protect this country's sovereignty and define our southern perimeter. The storms approach had not yet dampened our Arizona blue sky. The scene evoked a sense of peace and comfort I have come to expect when enjoying the outdoors in this unique and beautiful state.

Then the storm began. With the suddenness of a stampede, the skies erupted in a dazzling spectacle of lightning, punctuated by a roaring bass of thunder that rolled across the plains and echoed off the slopes of the mountains. Its force paid no heed to the border in its path. This was a creation of God, and it knew no boundary of man. The peace and comfort I had felt just moments before gave way to a feeling of awe and humility at the power unleashed before me. And, once again, I realized that it is what I have come to expect when enjoying the outdoors in this unique and beautiful state. I am humbled to be its scribe.
