The Gloaming in Seattle
Gloam•ing: Twilight, Dusk
It is one of my favorite times of the day. Long before I learned that the gloaming was also the magic hour in photography, that moment when the light is perfect, I knew that this was a magic moment. It is the time when the world transitions from the hectic confusion of the race to nowhere into the gentle calm of relaxation and de-stress.
On our recent trip to Seattle I found myself at the top of our hotel, camera at the ready, for the days end to begin. At my back, just moments before was one of the most majestic golden sunsets I had ever witnessed. And now, before me, was one of my favorite cities, posing in perfect light for its portrait.
For those unfamiliar, this image is anchored on the right with distant Mount Rainier, and on the left with the Key Arena and Space needle. Visible just in front of the skyline is the wonderous Seattle Center, with its distinctive white arch sculptures and the PACCAR IMAX Theater centering the image.
I am fortunate that I get to visit Seattle a couple of times a year. It reminds me of what a city should feel like.
