Breakfast with the Road Runner

Breakfast with the Road Runner

Each morning, after filling the seed feeders, watering the pond and fountains, putting out the oranges and refilling the suet and hummingbird feeders I treat myself to breakfast with the birds. I have a cup of coffee, and they have the food I put out. Sitting in the yard and watching the day unfold along with tracking the new birds that come in is one of the best parts of my day.

I love all the birds, but Road Runners have to be one of the most fun to watch as they dart from place to place in search of their meals. I've watched this particular youngster since he first emerged from the grasslands as a tiny and confused chick. Today I glanced him across the yard from the corner of my eye and immediately realized he had something special for breakfast. At first, I was afraid it was one of our baby Scaled Quail! Upon closer scrutiny, I realized it was just a poor lizard that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. By that time he had darted behind a bush, and I thought I missed my opportunity. When he jumped up on our wall a few minutes later, I immediately began shooting. This is my favorite from the series.
