American Ketrel

American Ketrel

Is there any Falcon in North America more beautiful than the American Kestrel? I think not. As they perch nimbly on the post's, poles and wires strewn across the southern Arizona high desert valleys, they take cute to exponential levels. But don't be fooled by this smallest of raptors looks. From the air, they are violently efficient and adept hunters that can pluck prey from ground cover with surgical precision.

And, it is in the hunt where one of their most incredible feats of aerial acrobatics takes place. Aiming into the wind, with wings furiously pounding, they can hang over a patch of prairie to better detect their prey. To behold this dance with the wind is to see grace unfold.

So the next time you are driving down a country lane keep an eye out for an American Kestrel on the poles, posts, and wires along the route. If you spy one and have some time, pull over and wait. You may be treated to the show of this exceptional falcon hovering and hunting for its next meal.

I thank my maker daily for the views He has allowed me to see and share. I remain his grateful scribe.
