In a dusty wash some miles south of nowhere live the surviving members of a clan so tied to the parched high desert landscape of Southern Arizona that they have become another contour in the map lines of its history. Layered in garments ostensibly too heavy for the clime, but necessary for protection from the withering assault of the elements, they move across the vast valley fields from sunrise to sunset tending their herd of cattle. Then, in the shaded comfort of the porches of their humble homes, with a beer in one hand and a cigar in the other, they relax and share stories of "the time when..." until the sun sets below the horizon.
I am but a guest in the world of the still wild west. A transplant on a mission to chronicle this awe-inspiring patch of the globe. This is a land where the ghosts of an ancient native people and a more modern pioneering cowboy still inhabit the countryside. Theirs is a rich history and story. In this, the first of an ongoing series, I offer a humble testimony, told in image and word, to the richness of their existence. It is also a testimony to the intricate beauty and diversity of His creation. I am only the scribe.
