Great Horned Owl I

Great Horned Owl I

Most people love Owls. They are almost mythical as the secret custodians of the night. Seeing one, no matter how often it happens, is one of the great rewards of spending time in nature. I have driven hours to find an Owl, to spend time in its vicinity, watch its behavior and photograph its beauty.

This may be why I am so excited that we have three Great Horned Owls that call the area around our backyard home. They visit us frequently during the early dusk, staying quiet through the gloaming until night falls and they begin the ritual of haunting calls back and forth. Of the three, this one is my favorite. I have not seen a Great Horned with this distinctive, light coloration. I call it my Snowy Great Horned Owl.

I may bore you with future shots of these stunning birds. It is just my way of paying homage to their greatness.
