Let's start with the end. Last nights monsoon squall was as epic as any I have witnessed. Tuscon took the brunt of the season's anger - oh, how I wish I were there! Here in Sierra Vista, we were treated to a late coming of the southern Arizona high deserts seasonal fury. For somewhere around four hours an unrelenting onslaught for fire from the sky rained down upon the sleepy outpost. At one point the storm moved directly overhead forcing me to retreat indoors and anxiously watch my radar until it was safe enough to return to shoot.

The storm continued long after I stopped shooting. Its flashes of brilliant light periodically illuminating our darkened rooms in an eerie off-tempo strobe light effect. When I saw this image in my viewfinder, I figured I was done for the night. I will work backward, sharing this, my last shot, of the night. Eventually I will get to the beginning, a pastoral dayscape filled with grazing cows in fertile fields of native grass whose tranquility was interupted with massive bolts of sky fire.

My sequence is much like life. Sometimes remembering backward is a cathartic change of perspective that can make what seemed so difficult at the time much more palatable. Then the hidden terror's darkness brought can be revealed to the freeing solace of brilliant daylight. Our darkest times are often just a prelude to our brightest. That is why hope is always best kept close to the heart.
