Magnificent
Every year the bird police get together and make profound decisions on which species should be grouped, which should be separated, and what their names should be. I do not envy this group their task. Birders are a pernicious bunch and will protest and spend the next six months discussing whatever decisions are made by the group. Take for example the Rivoli's Hummingbird.
As the second largest Hummingbird north of Mexico this species, until last year, was justly named and accurately named "Magnificent Hummingbird". One has only to gaze at the bird's regal stature and beautiful plumage to tell that Magnificent is the most appropriate moniker for the species. But, I don't have strong opinions on this matter.
I captured this image at Beaty's Guest Ranch yesterday while patiently waiting for the White-eared Hummingbird to show up. While it never did the day was still a victory. In addition to the incredible experience of sitting amongst dozens of hummingbirds zipping around me, I had the joy of listening to Beaty share stories about the property and its animal and avian guests, as well as seeing a life Northern Pygmy Owl. I had already seen the Goshawks earlier in the season and decided to be one less person encroaching on their nest.
And yes, I did immediately think of the 70's classic, Saturday Night Fever, when I saw this shot.
