Female Anna's in Flight
Female Hummingbirds don't often get their due. The males are larger and typically more colorful with bright, luminescent gorgets that startle and amaze. The females offer a more subtle and graceful beauty, an elegance in stature and flight that males don't share.
Behind that diminutive size and fluid grace is the tenacity of a warrior. They are just as aggressive as the males, staking out their territory and protecting it with vigilant vigor. In fact, once they select their nesting site, they will keep the male hummingbirds away from it. The belief is that the males ostentatious display might invite unwanted predators to the nest. So let's add pretty smart to the female hummingbird's list of accomplishment.
