Elf Owl II

Elf Owl II

The tiniest raptor. At about five inches tall the Elf Owl has the distinction of being the smallest owl in the world. I thought that Northern Saw-Whet Owls were tiny until I met this little bird. A summer resident of Southern Arizona Saguaro Cactus and Riparian woods, these Owls can be distinctly heard as night settles over the high desert landscape. But hearing and seeing are two very different things. The best place to see one is at Batiste Bed Breakfast and Birds. Each night visitors are welcome (there is a very modest fee) to sit under the exquisite Arizona starry nights and wait for the Owls to leave their nest to begin their hunt. It is a great experience.
