Yesterday was a special day. In addition to being Veterans Day, it was the day we brought my dad home from the Long Island hospital to our new home in NJ.

While not a long distance, it is a long, traffic snarled drive. More so at rush hour, which is when he was discharged from the hospital. At best, it was an extremely uncomfortable journey for him.

As we crossed over the George Washington Bridge, we noticed that the city was lit up in homage to our veterans. As always, the iconic Empire State building was the centerpiece of the show. Standing majestic in red, white and blue, she was a beacon of patriotic gratitude to all those that have served to protect and defend this country's freedoms.

Dad is a Marine, and this was a fitting backdrop to the rest of the ride home. As we drove along the NJ Turnpike, I asked if he wanted to get a closer, more unobstructed look. He did. I headed out to my favorite Weehawken spot for shooting the city skyline.

I asked Dad if he minded me taking a picture. He responded he would be shocked if I didn't. I wanted to get the unobstructed view of the entire skyline, yet the pier I normally shoot from was closed. Chart House restaurant happened to be at the end of an adjoining pier, with an even better view. In the past, I didn't feel it appropriate to ask to use their dock, but this was a special occasion. The manager could not have been nicer. He pointed me to the docks entrance and wished me luck with the photo. (We will be having dinner there soon)
