Isolated to oak woods in the mountains of southwestern Arizona, the Arizona Woodpecker is the only brown woodpecker in the US. I was able to see this beauty in the comfort of Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary's viewing area while waiting for the Montezuma Quail to appear. Alas, the Quail came close, calling the entire time, but never emerged from the grass. I still consider this a great day.
Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary (Formerly Ash Canyon B&B) is a must visit for birders coming to the Hereford / Sierra Vista area. Internationally renowned as a hummingbird magnet during the summer, the sanctuary is also a phenomenal place to find difficult to see species the entire year. Run by the dedicated and knowledgeable Mary Jo, a trip here is well worth the time. I am lucky; I live about a half a mile from the sanctuary and will get to spend lots of time there viewing and learning about birds.
