Long-eared Owl -nictitating membrane
Owls have three eyelids, an upper, lower and third, nictitating membrane that cleans and protects the eye. As someone who studies birds, I relish the opportunities to learn and see more about how they live in the wild. This is the first time I captured the actual nictating membrane in action. The photo might not fall into the cute, beautiful or OMG categories but to me, it provides an unusual study of this complex and intelligent hunter.
